Stic.Man - Black Girl Shine - (Manhood) [2007]
“The names around the necks of these black students represent the countless black bodies that have been murdered while society turned and continues to turn a blind eye. We are doing this in light of the Trayvon Martin case in order to emphasize that it has not been the first nor the last time a black body has been treated as a disposable object. We have not chosen to wear hoodies because this image has been used to mystify the core issue of concern: ANTI-BLACKNESS. The other phrases around the necks of these black bodies address the everlasting issues that still permeate through society; the point being that these issues FOREVER stem from structures, systems, and institutions in our nation that were founded on the basis of anti-blackness. “Some cameraphone photos I snapped of UC Irvine’s Black Students Union and their demonstration today. Some of the signs read: “I am ignored,” “I am being dehumanized,” “I am Emmitt Till,” and “I am a harmless Black.”
This is dope. The students of Washington DC should all band together and do something similar in front of the White House or the Capital Building
